Cell Phones- A Walk Down Memory Lane

By Byron Reynolds

Remember the days when phones were big and unsightly, with a display that you could hardly read a thing on. But owning one was a boost to your ego, since not anyone could afford it. But its a whole different world ten years later and things could not be more different. A phone is something that simply put, you cant do without it. They are a lifestyle now, and they do pretty much everything for you, except get you a beer or make tea when your friends come over.

Lets take this walk together and see just how far mobile phones have come since they were first thought of. Starting from the ergonomics, monochrome displays were the in-thing slightly over a decade ago. Then they started getting some color, and increasing in size. Right now we have super-AMOLED and Retina displays that are simply too wowing to describe. And the size- well what started as a two-line display is now a 2.4 standard for a phone with a hardware keypad or keyboard, but for touch, 4.3 is not too far from being considered ordinary like with the EVO 4G.

Designs have also undergone some kind of change. While bar-shaped is still a winner even by todays standards, sliders are still in the picture too. Flip phones, dual-sliders and swivel designs have not been phased out. And now a new breed like with the Motorola Backflip is hoping to take on the future head on. And then there is the touchscreen craze that is almost like a global awakening of some sort. In some books, if your phone is not a touchscreen, its not a phone. But the good old hardware alphanumerics and QWERTYs are still dignified enough to stand the test of time.

Features are being developed with every rising sun. Infrared and GPRS might have passed for data transfers, but now we have Bluetooth, WI-FI, 3G and 3.5G for that. 4G is not too far away either. A feature rich-phone must have the aforementioned, plus a good camera, a navigation system, a capable browser and a lot of memory. This is what is considered as the starting point, as you dig deeper to CPUs, XviD/DivX for video playback, accelerometer sensors and so on.

A lot of debate is ensuing about the future of devices such as media players, cameras, camcorders and navigation systems because cell phones have entered their territories. But the future is unpredictable, and this might just be true.

Right now, basic phones are now much more affordable than the decades past. But to get a phone with the whole nine yards, you need to dig deep into your pockets. You dont get to enjoy the iPhone 3GS hype if you are not willing to spare $700. And if you are filthy rich, perhaps the Gresso Luxor adorned in gold, sapphires and diamonds, might appeal to you. No, we wouldnt even dream of it ourselves. But we are at that point in time when such phones are in the market.
