I actually use this attached to my CD player section as I never use it. It works just as well as it did on the AC vent (I moved it because it gets way too hot here to only have one vent pointed at you and I felt bad using the passenger side vent).
But it got really bad any time I hit a bump. I would say bumps would make it shake sideways as much as a full centimeter. This is the one to get. I was concerned that it would obscure the USB port on the Droid X but it works great.
It fits the Droid perfect, leaves space for power cord and exterior jack so I can place it on the holder and hear music and talk through the speakers. Kid loves it too as we can drive with it swiveled into the widescreen/horizontal position and watch movies with the speakers plugged into the car system. I did find the lock/unlock button to be a little hard to get to, - BUT - the smaller padded arms on the mount can be REMOVED (easily) and put back on - which I think would solve my problem (I could remove just one). I'd recommend this mount :) I recently used this on a long trip to hold my phone while it displayed navigation info and also while it was playing music.
Overall, these are quality and the suction cup stays on unless you really beat on it. I would recommend this mount for all users to keep your phone secure in the car. I used this for my phone, which is a Motorola Matrix 4G with the Otterbox Commuter case. The phone fits in just fine, and all ports (audio/USB/mini HDMI/volume buttons) are not hindered by the mount.
The build quality of this mount is very impressive for the price! The plastic feels solid, not flimsy, and the suction cup is stronger and larger than the one that came with my Garmin. I've contemplated switching to the window mount, but honestly, the vent mount suffices to stay out of my field of view and within reach if I need to adjust GPS without pulling the phone off the window. The cushions on the feet and arms are starting to show signs of continued compression, but I'm not particularly concerned yet. They're still soft enough to provide a good grip without being too tight. The push button release for the ratcheting arms is quick and easy to use, and so far hasn't released unprompted.
It's not difficult but does take some coaxing. It is heavy duty and made of great materials that are obviously of high quality. Looking closely at the suction cup, I noticed it was warped in one spot. So clearly the seal wasn't good, and it couldn't hold on.
My only issue is that the button used to release the side clips is a little bit flimsy. I use the suction cup attachment for my windshield, but it has a mounting disk for the dash, so you can mount it there, and it comes with a clip for your air vent.
I use it with my phone as both a GPS and other times I use it to play my music. I am 100% satisfied with this mount.
I bought this mount for my iPhone 4s and it works great! I use it in my ac vent.
