How to Search for Internet Service Provider

By Sandra McDermott

Up until a few years ago, determining who the internet service providers were in your zip code, and then comparing packages and plans, took a lot of leg work and time. For those of us without a lot of time on their hands, or who perhaps were not necessarily interested in the technology enough to really investigate our options, it was something we most likely avoided.

Now there are terrific resources available that highlight internet providers reviewed as well as anything related to this important decision right on the information superhighway.

Consumers used to have to call and sit on hold with cable providers or DSL providers to listen to a sales pitch, hear about pricing and packaging and take notes so they could repeat this process over and over again until they had enough information to compare them all.

With the booming popularity of online bill paying, banking and shopping, many of us wouldn't dream of spending time on the telephone comparison shopping if we can help it. It's so much easier to research and compare internet technology offerings online, and even order service without ever picking up the telephone.

Finding a wealth of data on various internet technologies like DSL internet, cable, satellite and fiber optics is commonplace. Great resources are available that list the current plans and promotions of various internet providers so that you can see at a glance the cost of the download speeds you're interested in. You can also compare the various technologies available, as once size certainly doesn't fit all, even with something like broadband.

Since once size doesn't fit all, you should examine your habits. Are you just a light emailer that hops online occasionally to read the news? Then a medium speed DSL plan is perfect for you, and very economical. You can find service for under $20 per month from top providers like Verizon or AT&T.

But if you have a need for speed, you'll want to check up on cable internet or fiber optics service from top providers like Verizon FiOS, ATT Uverse, or Comcast.

Small towns out in the country didn't have many options in the past, except for dialup internet. However, satellite internet is becoming a viable choice for many in rural areas, plus DSL and wireless service are expanding their network coverage aggressive. Shop online to determine all of your available options.
